Building Climate-Resilient Education Systems | ASCEND Synthesis Team

This team will synthesise literature on the impact of climate change, analyse geospatial data to assess the climate vulnerability of schools across sub-Saharan Africa, and examine case studies of climate-proofing interventions.

Overview

About this synthesis team

This team will synthesise literature on the impact of climate change, analyse geospatial data to assess the climate vulnerability of schools across sub-Saharan Africa, and examine case studies of climate-proofing interventions.

The Challenge

Extreme weather events, flooding, and rising temperatures are making it harder for children across Sub-Saharan Africa to reach school, stay in class, and concentrate once they are there. Ministries of education rarely have the high-resolution evidence needed to know which schools are most exposed, or which upgrades would protect learning first.

Our Approach

The BICRES team integrates existing geospatial climate vulnerability datasets with regional educational infrastructure and attendance data. Rather than collecting new primary data, the team connects scattered national and continental datasets, then co-develops the resulting maps and guidance directly with ministry officials and school infrastructure planners.

Expected Outputs

  • Localised, high-resolution climate vulnerability maps for schools
  • Policy brief for ministries of education
  • Climate-resilient schooling toolkit

    Indoor Heat

This research team investigates how climate change influences indoor heat exposure and related health risks in low-income settlements across Africa, where poorly cooled housing can amplify heatwaves and intensify vulnerability to heat stress and heat-sensitive illnesses.

    Emergency Vehicle Call Out

This research investigates whether climate change has increased the demand for emergency vehicle call outs by worsening climate-related health risks, and assesses the extent to which these changes are attributable to human influence on the climate.
