Blue Africa | ASCEND Synthesis Team
The Blue Africa team seeks to ensure carbon storage efforts in African coastal and marine ecosystems are aligned with the needs of African people.
Overview
About this synthesis team
The Blue Africa team seeks to ensure carbon storage efforts in African coastal and marine ecosystems are aligned with the needs of African people.
The Challenge
Scattered marine datasets prevent African coastal authorities from executing coordinated, climate-resilient marine spatial planning. Fisheries records, oceanographic monitoring, and biodiversity surveys are held nationally and rarely integrated across borders, leaving shared ecosystems and coastal livelihoods exposed.
Our Approach
The Blue Africa team brings together marine biologists, local community leaders, and economic policy planners to synthesise existing coastal and oceanographic data into a unified conservation and planning framework for African maritime authorities.
Expected Outputs
- Blue economy policy framework
- Regional marine vulnerability maps
- Marine conservation toolkit
